Proyecto San Gerado Costa Rica joins Rose Charities Canada

image3Costa Rica’s rural population, especially in the south, has fallen far behind their city cousins in access to affordable education and adequately paying jobs. The typical family of 6 survives on $250/month with typical monthly food bills of over $120 alone. Proyecto San Gerardo has been offering an opportunity tolocal people in the villages of Rivas, Perez Zeledón, to stay in their communities and acquire income-generating skills since we were asked to teach English in 2006.  Every year an logoaverage of 200 students benefit from our English, Computer Skills, Business skills, First Aid and Apprenticeship courses as well as many more enjoying partial to full high school and university scholarships.  The project currently  provides employment to 3 local women and this year we will expand to 6 to accommodate the demand for Proyecto San Gerardo’s activities.     Read more..<click>..

Rose Charities Hillman Fund short report 2012-2013

rr10The Hillman Medical Education Fund (HMEF) of Rose Charities Canada was started in 2007 by Dr Liz Hillman in memory of her husband Don and to continue their lifetime’s work supporting health education, especially in East Africa.   HMEF’s goal is to support potential leaders in health care and assist them as they build health education projects in their own communities. This year HMEF funded projects are in Uganda, Kenya, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Cambodia. Dedicated local leaders run all these projects. They are able to stretch our small grants to achieve big results. Typically grants are under $5000. The HMEF Team in Canada, led by Dr Joanne Young and guided by Dr Liz Hillman are all volunteers of Rose Charities Canada. They volunteer their time and cover any admin costs so that 100% of your donation will be sent to a project.

Around 2 hours drive away from Kampala along a rutted non paved road near the village of Mukono, Uganda, lies the Volset School. The school gives education to some 160 kids, most of them from very deprived backgrounds.   The school does great work and the kids are happy, but is still very poor and is in need of many resources.  Nevertheless it does manage to get some assistance, including through Rose Charities and that way manages to keep going .

The shool identifies its most pressing needs as  1) sponsorship for students, 2) refurbishment and construction of more teaching space, 3) establishing a more secure water supply (probably a bore-hole),  finding one or two used donated computers to teach computer skills.

Despite hardships,  Directors Lydia Nansukusa, and Festus Bazira never give up hope.  Festus explained his vision for the school to me. These are our ‘Diplomats of the Future’ he said of his kids..

Excellence in Education: Uganda March 2013

Kampala, Uganda, will see Rose Charities, partner organizations, supporters and anyone interested meeting to discuss and hear presentations on education and health training.   Rose Charities organizations ‘Brighter Smiles‘  and Stand Tall Education will be the main organizers but input from others such as the Hillman Fund , HEADA , Greater Learning is anticipated. Topics will be widespread but cover such interesting areas as peer-to-peer education, health promoting schools (Dr Andrew Macab is an expert in this field), goal focus  and enrichment of the education process, and new health promoting and training initiatives. There will be visits to the project sites of Stand Tall and Brighter Smiles, and (on Sat 9th) a strong discussion involvement by school children themselves.  The goal is to educate and increase the practical  knowledge base of participants, network and update on current areas of success in new health and education initiatives.

The conference is open without charge (up to a certain seating limit, after which a charge may be requested ) to an genuinely interested and/or group representatives.

Rose Charities Canada Jan 2013 Project Forum

An amazing group of people attended the Jan 2013 Rose Charities Canada Project Forum of varied interests and backgrounds and organizations.  A comment from one of the participants summarized it well ‘I cant believe the amount of shere competence and expertise present in this room this evening;   The meeting was held again at Creekside Community Centre. False Creek, Vancouver

This year the format was slightly different.  instead of fixed presentations the concept was to more to generate debate, comment and constructive participation.  In the first half Will Grut of Rose International summarized the network in an individual presentation but invited the various project groups to update as their projects were presented.  In the second half a panel consisting of Dr Andrew Macnab ( ) ,  Dr Ruth Brighouse and Annette Borkent  ( ) facilitated discussion using aspects of their excellent projects to focus on particular issues.

Food, sushi, dips, cakes, cookies and coffee were kindly provided by some of the participants, notably Dr Diana Carter (UBC Psychiatry Dept)

International Counsellor (original organizer of 2005 Rose Tsunami post traumatic counselling program) Yaya de Andrade ( see )  attended as well as Emily McCance and

of the Rose Social Enterprise Committee  (see ) . The Hillman Fund were well represented by  Dr Joanne Young and Mr Craig Keeting , as were International Health Initiatives, Juliette .  Dr Ellen Coburn of Guatemala school project contributed an excellent update.  Mrs Janice (and husband Dr David) Wensley of the Safe Motherhood Committee of Rose Charities came as did    Rose Charities Canada’s Chair, Maggie Francis and Hon Treasurer Eric Vanderluit   Accountant Kevin Simpson, (who carries out pivotal accounting  work for Rose Canada) as did a fellow accountant and Rose supporter,   Richard McCallum

The atmosphere of the meeting was stimulating, creative and constructive. Discussions ranged around many areas though focusing on transfer of training and teaching schools.  Such skills transfer is very much the focus of the projects (Birthing attendant skills Guatemala and Health Promotion in Uganda) .  The Rose Charities network is now fairly broad as well as deep and the forum allowed organizers from dispersed parts of it to meet and exchange ideas.

A big thank you to Maggie Francis (Chair Rose Charities Canada) and Linda Roberts(Rose International Hon Sec)  for much of the structuring of the meeting.


Christmas thoughts for Rose Vietnam






Dear Quizzers:Thank you for supporting the Rose Charities quiz night.The funds we raised will provide continued education to the 200+ children in the Mahastara school in Madagascar, and support for the 50+ street children in the Rose VN school in Thanh Tien. We also provided Saturday lunch for approximately 30 at the Union Gospel Mission with the Quiz Night left-overs!Below is one quiz category on Vietnam that we did not get to on Quiz Night:

Rose Vietnam Community Development Project

For 400 years Thanh Tien village has been producing beautiful hand-made paper flowers. These flowers are particularly significant during the lunar new year holiday (Tet). Before the war Thanh Tien village thrived from the sale of these flowers, which were popular and much sought after throughout the country. But this village has not recovered from the devastating effects of the war, compounded by the damage wrought almost annually by typhoons and major storms.

In 2010 Rose Vietnam was approached by Thanh Tien’s Chief and village elders for support to revitalize this indigenous craft. They feel this renaissance and the related stimulus to tourism will alleviate poverty by creating employment opportunities, particularly for young people, many of whom are currently forced to leave home in search of work.

Rose Vietnam has set out a three-pronged plan to implement the project:


1.Refurbish the facilities where the flowers are currently made, which will also serve as a “class-room” for the flower making classes offered to tourists.  Provide funds for the local villagers to purchase quality materials for the hand-made flowers.  (This has been partially accomplished)

2.Initiate training programmes for guides / translators (ESL essential, and other languages), hospitality, marketing and accounting courses.  (Deferred for lack of funding but is a high priority).

3.Design the Welcome Center (This has been accomplished with the assistance of a local architect who donated his services).


1.Establish the Welcome Center, featuring a pictorial history of Thanh Tien village and the hand made flower-making tradition, as well as a coffee shop/restaurant and an outlet for visitors to purchase the flowers. (Pending).

2.Establish a Board to oversee the activities and growth of the project comprised of the village Chief, members from the local community and a representative from Rose Charities Vietnam.


1.Market to local, national and international travel media and operators. (Members of the Rose VN Board have personal connections with Saigon Tourism, the Saigon Times and individuals in the travel industry in Vietnam).

2. Prepare multi-language visual and written media re the history of Thanh Tien and the historic significance of the paper flowers.  This information will also be produced in Braille by the Rose Vietnam school for blind adults currently supported by Rose Vietnam.

3. Prepare press materials for local and national media.

Funding will provide ….

  1. Better quality materials (i.e. paper and dyes);
  2. An attractive Welcome Center where visitors can buy and/or learn how to make the flowers and learn about the history of this village and this craft;
  3. Training for young people in tourism/hospitality so that they can ensure the long term success of the project;
  4. Language training to act as guides and interpreters;
  5. Enrollment in accounting and business to ensure proper management; and, most importantly,
  6. Assistance with marketing and media to promote tourism to the village.

The timing for this project is serendipitous: Hue is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the central coast of Vietnam. In 2012 the Ministry of Tourism in Vietnam is promoting Hue through “National Tourism Year”. Statistics from the Vietnam National Tourism Board show that in 2011 international visitors to Vietnam reached almost six million; international arrivals in 2012 are up over 20%. Given that Hue is among the top five Vietnamese cities visited by foreign and local tourists, we can anticipate that a minimum of 15% of these tourists will visit Hue and Thanh Tien Village, which is located on the Huong River about 5km downstream from Hue and opposite the ancient town of Bao Vinh.

Through Rose Vietnam, a licensed charity in Vietnam, we have established a strong relationship with the elders and the village community and are supporting a number of projects in Thanh Tien. These include a school for blind adults, income generation programmes for the blind, a school for street children and the construction of brick homes for impoverished villagers who are either homeless or living in shacks. Rose Charities believes that a relatively conservative investment in the 400-year-old indigenous craft will lead to an improved quality of life and ultimately prosperity for this entire village.

RoseJet powers up Sri Lanka kids education with K2K

As the 2012 school year enters its final months, it’s time for Rose Charities Sri Lanka to begin implementing its K2K (Kid to Kid) or JET Scholarship Program for the 2013 school year. So far, 16 students from the Natpiddimunai, Annamalai, and Pandirupu areas have been identified as needing special help and support. These 16 students, ages 6-15, come from families which have been severely affected by tsunami, war, or other hardships. All are missing at least one parent, and all face great obstacles to receiving the basic necessity of a proper education.

Rose Charities has worked with community support workers, local public school administrators, and the divisional secretary’s office to identify those children with the greatest need. After background checks and verification was conducted by RCSL, 16 students and their families were brought together for a meeting on August 30th with Rose Charities Sri Lanka CEO Anthony Richard and Rose staff who implement this program. Each of these 16 students will receive continued financial and material support provided by generous overseas donors participating in the K2K program. Initially, this will include a school supply package consisting of pens, pencils, a geometry set, textbooks and exercise books, and a backpack. In addition, an educational savings account has been opened for eight of the older students with an initial deposit.

CEO Anthony Richard talked with the families about the importance of saving for a child’s educational future and of the great empowerment and success that can be attained with a quality education. He also stressed accountability for both students and parents in keeping Rose Charities up-to-date so that it can provide continued support, and in ensuring that the funds donated to the K2K program are making a real and lasting impact on children’s lives.

Cambodia Medical Elective program upgraded..

The PPSC Rose Medical Elective Program is newly established although Rose has had experience in providing a medical elective program in the past. Our star Surgeon, Dr Nous Sarom has moved to become the Head of Surgery at the Preah Mettokelea Surgical Centre (PPSC) at the Military Hospital in Phnom Penh. Dr Sarom has had a long history with Rose and we have adapted our program to follow this wonderful surgeon and teacher. The Program is now being administered by Ms Sophak Chim who has excellent organisational skills and fantastic written English. She is managing our complicated schedule and ensuring that students receive communication from Cambodia upon receiving their email enquiries. Obviously being a new program there will be teething problems but we hope that the program will evolve to be a leading elective program in Cambodia, especially with the assistance of great feedback from the students!  … read more…

Who we are
Rose Madagascar is a small, volunteer-run group that is
committed to improving access to education in rural Madagascar. While our Canadian
Board is based in Western Canada, the heart and soul of our work lies in the
hands of our Malagasy partners who work tirelessly to improve the quality of
life in rural Madagascar.
Rural Education Initiative
Our main project, the
Mahatsara Rural Education Initiative, is located in Tsarahonenana, Madagascar.
The vision for Mahatsara came from a group of community members who saw a need
for education development in their village.
In English, Mahatsara
literally means ‘getting better’, or ‘improving’ and that is exactly what the
project aims to do. Having recognized a deficiency in early childhood
education, environmental awareness, nutrition, and literacy, Rose Madagascar
teamed up with Mahatsara to start a school in their village. The school is the
first project of many in a 10 year plan that will concentrate on improving the
quality of life in rural Madagascar.
Our Objectives
  • To reach out to individuals and
    communities facing adversity.
  • To empower individuals and
    communities to improve their quality of life from within.
  • To provide children and adults
    with access to academic and vocational training to improve the standard of
  • To encourage sustainable and
    holistic development through programs that consider the environment,
    health, education, and social well-being of communities as fundamental
    principles guiding development.
Mahatsara Projects &
  • Quality Education – In addition to providing access to education to
    children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend school,
    Mahatsara is committed to ensuring that each child receives a quality
News from the 2011-2012 school year – Mahatsara students have had an
amazing year of success.  We are very
proud to report that our grade 5 students were ranked amongst the top in the
region this year. The top grade on the National Examination in the Alarobia
region went to one of our students (with six other Mahatsara students scoring
in the top 10). 
In addition, all 27 Mahatsara grade 9 students passed the
difficult National Exam to receive their diplomas (we are still awaiting the
regional results to see where the students rank).
  • Community Garden Project – The school has a series of community garden plots
    that are cultivated by parents, students, and other community members. A
    portion of the harvest from each garden plot is contributed to the
    Mahatsara nutrition program.
  • Nutrition Program – The nutrition program provides lunch to
    students in an effort to ensure that each child receives at least one
    healthy meal per day. Parents volunteer at the program on a daily basis and
    students take turns bringing firewood for cooking from home each day.
  • The Mahatsara Parent’s Association – The Mahatsara Parent’s
    Association is the driving force behind the project and the school. While
    the parents of Mahatsara do not always have the ability to contribute
    financially to their children’s education, they contribute in many other
    resourceful and much needed ways.
  • Community Library – The school has a library with a small
    collection of books and educational resources. Books are very expensive in
    so virtually all of the books have been donated by international
  • Sports Programs – The School is engaged in a variety of sports
    teams and programs. In 2011, the Mahatsara basketball team made it to the
    regional finals.
  • Health Education – Throughout the years Mahatsara has organized
    community health education sessions at the request of community members.
    Some of the topics that have been covered include: sex education,
    nutrition training, and training on the hazards of cooking on a fire
  • The Mahatsara Store – The Mahatsara store sells school supplies and
    other small items to community members who can afford them. All proceeds
    are put back into the project.
  • Field Trips – The school has taken students on several field trips
    in the surrounding area. Among the most significant field trips has been a
    trip to the capital of Madagascar,
    through which older students at the school had the opportunity to see the
    capital and to tour the University. For most students, this was their
    first trip to Antananarivo

To school by JET (the Rose JET Fund )

While watching his dad struggling with a complex grant application for  child education,  his son asked why it was so difficult. His father told him that it was so difficult finding the ‘novel approaches’ the donors were looking for, explaining that so  many grants now wanted to be new-thinking and different’ .  His don looked confused   “Whats that got to do with going to school”  he said….

Bingo !  KISSS !  ‘Keep it Simple, just Send kids to School !’

The media  nowadays try to get the stories which are different, unusual, sensational.  Many grant panels are pulled by this process. Understandably they want the publicity (helps they themselves get needed donations).   Organizations making light bulbs out of Coke bottles, computers made of of tin-cans etc attract attention.

While these fascinating projects have their place, the fact is, while of little media ‘wow’ ,   in the developing world, kids want, but huge numbers cant afford, to go to school.    More often than not the schools are there, the kids simply cant access them for want of the pitifully small amount of money, perhaps $50 per year which is needed to support the school.

In many cases the actual school building exists (organizations sometimes build, run the school for a while then move on) and there is are teachers available who will work for the barest minimum.

The Jet-Fund is aimed at helping creating a jet-stream of kids to be able to fulfill their dreams of education to help them fly into successful and happy futures.  At the moment the fund works very closely with the K2K program(s) in Sri Lanka, though it is being expanded into other parts of Asia and into Africa too.

The fund is administered by an advisory panel of school-children (currently UK) overseen by one or more members of the Rose Charities International Council.  No administration costs are taken at the donor country end, though a small percentage (up to 10% absolute maximum) is permitted at the recipient end to ensure proper screening and structuring (as can be imagined demand is colossal and far far outweighs the funding available)
